E-LOBSTER Project: Revolutionizing Rail Transport with Integrated Energy Storage

Executive Summary
The E-LOBSTER project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, represents a groundbreaking initiative to integrate renewable energy sources with electrified rail and road transport. By leveraging advanced power electronics and energy storage, the project aims to enhance the reliability and efficiency of light-railway and distribution networks, setting a new standard for sustainable urban transport.

Project Overview: E-LOBSTER
Funding: European Union’s Horizon 2020

Grant Agreement: No 774392

Challenge: To improve the reliability and electrical efficiency of light-railway and distribution networks amidst increasing renewable energy penetration.

The Situation
Traditional light-railway and distribution networks operate independently, relying heavily on consistent power supplies. The growing inclusion of renewable energy sources presents challenges to the stability and efficiency of these systems.

The Solution
E-LOBSTER introduces an innovative integration of renewable energy, electrified transport, and energy storage, managed by a Control Management system designed to optimize both transport and distribution networks. This system enhances energy synergy and maximizes the use of local renewable energy sources (RES), with the Metro de Madrid serving as the pilot implementation site due to its significant RES integration.

The Outcome

  • Innovative R+G Management System: Significantly reduces electricity losses, offering a new model for Railway and Grid (R+G) energy management.
  • Real-time Monitoring Tool: Tracks losses and energy consumption across power distribution and railway electrification networks.
  • Power Electronics Solution: Manages energy transfer between traction substations and distribution networks efficiently.
  • R+G Energy Management System: Optimizes the interaction between electrified transport and distribution networks, utilizing shared assets for maximum efficiency.
  • Energy Storage: Identifies and validates optimal storage technology to achieve synergy between distribution and railway networks.

“The E-LOBSTER project not only showcases the potential of integrating renewable energy into urban transport but also sets a benchmark for future sustainable transport solutions”.

E-LOBSTER stands as a testament to the power of innovative energy solutions in transforming urban transport. The project paves the way for more sustainable, efficient, and reliable urban mobility solutions by bridging the gap between renewable energy sources and electrified transport.
